In collaboration with Nokia, LMT is the first operator in the Baltic region to commercially launch the next-generation 5G Standalone network – also known as 5G+ – starting this July. This reaffirms LMT’s leadership in bringing the latest technologies to its customers, offering households and businesses greater security, faster data transmission speeds, and reduced latency.
Operating in Standalone mode, the 5G network enables a new level of services and functionality, paving the way for solutions that require high reliability and security. With its ultra-low latency and higher upload speeds, 5G+ is crucial for use cases such as autonomous vehicles, remote surgeries, large-scale Internet of Things (IoT) data processing, video streaming, and the development of virtual reality.
In the near future, 5G+ will not only deliver improved stability, capacity, and speed, but also enable network slicing – the ability to create multiple virtual networks, each tailored to an individual customer’s performance and security needs. This will be particularly important for emergency responders, firefighters, security services, and defense institutions.
With the introduction of 5G+, LMT has taken another major step in the development of 5G, further strengthening Latvia’s leadership in the region and opening up even broader opportunities for implementing Internet of Things applications, smart city solutions, healthcare innovations, defense systems, and other technologies that benefit society in everyday life,
says LMT President Juris Binde. To access 5G+, users will need new SIM cards specifically designed for this network. The service is supported by the latest locally-manufactured Mikrotik routers.
