Following the start of the new year, Gulbene has become another Latvian city to implement advanced traffic infrastructure improvements. LMT has installed smart traffic monitoring solutions at two key intersections, which will operate in test mode for a period of three months.

The traffic monitoring solution at the intersection of Vidus and Brīvības Streets will track pedestrian flow to determine the necessity of a signalized pedestrian crossing or, conversely, if the current crossing should be closed. At the intersection of Baložu and Brīvības Streets, the system aims to gather statistics on left-turn maneuvers in both directions to optimize traffic management.

“A modern and safe environment is a priority for every municipality. We are pleased to partner with LMT to take this step forward in enhancing the convenience and safety of Gulbene’s residents in their daily commutes.”

– Normunds Mazūrs, Chairman of the Gulbene Municipal Council

LMT’s solutions are already operational in several Latvian cities – including Riga, Liepāja, Jūrmala, and Salaspils – as well as in Graz, Austria. These systems serve dual functions: recording traffic violations and providing the traffic flow data essential for urban infrastructure planning.

“Modern technology provides significant added value by helping achieve practical goals, such as creating a comfortable, safe, and pleasant urban environment. LMT’s experience in Latvia and abroad shows that smart traffic monitoring significantly improves road safety and driving culture while contributing vital data for urban planning. We are pleased that more Latvian cities are choosing these innovations to improve the daily lives of their residents.”

– Juris Binde, President of LMT.

LMT’s traffic monitoring solution is based on a GDPR-compliant system equipped with machine vision and AI algorithms. The technology detects offenses such as running red lights, illegal use of public transport lanes, prohibited stopping at intersections, and disobeying advanced traffic signals. It also performs object detection and classification for vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle flows.

The solution consists of a specially configured edge computing unit equipped with computer vision algorithms, high-resolution cameras, network hardware, and proprietary software developed by LMT.
