This September, the European Commission’s Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA), including its Director, Marina Zanchi, visited Latvia to learn about EU-co-funded projects in the country that focus on digital development, health, and sustainable growth. On September 11, LMT welcomed HaDEA representatives to its headquarters and showcased how LMT’s 5G innovations are used in public safety and environmental surveillance, particularly in the 5G4LIVES project.

The visit assessed Latvia’s involvement in implementing EU policies and discussed potential ways to enhance cooperation between Latvian institutions and HaDEA in the future. During the delegation’s visit to LMT, three major EU-funded projects were presented, including 5G4LIVES, a collaborative project focused on safety and protecting lives and the environment in Riga and Turin.

LMT provided a detailed insight into the 5G4LIVES project process, including its objectives, current developments, and 5G innovations being deployed within its scope, such as the drone corridor, mobile 5G infrastructure, 5G-powered drones, and more. LMT representatives explained how their technology helps with rescue operations. They highlighted that drones and Mobile Edge Computing speed up response times, while a private 5G network provides stable communication during a crisis. Additionally, the importance of collaboration between public authorities and companies to test such solutions in real-life scenarios was stressed. LMT representatives also showcased innovations within the field of private 5G networks, including one of LMT’s latest solutions, 5G Core.

Latvia is not just a place for testing technologies. It is an internationally recognised centre for developing and deploying innovations. And the 5G4LIVES project is a great example of how technologies save lives. LMT can assure that we are ready to develop further solutions that connect 5G infrastructure, drones, and AI technologies to improve the efficiency of rescue operations,

said Juris Binde, President of LMT.

On September 12, HaDEA representatives visited the Knowledge Innovation Centre of Riga Technical University (RTU), where more project presentations and discussions took place, including a presentation by Aigars Runčis, Ventures Department Director at LMT. Aigars shared how LMT leverages CEF funding to drive technological transformation and implementation through the 5G4LIVES project and other initiatives.

As part of the innovative 5G4LIVES project, we are developing the first dedicated 5G drone corridor in the Baltics to enable computer vision-powered, automated surveillance flights along the Vecāķi and Ķīšezers beaches. This isn’t just technology for technology’s sake – it’s about saving lives.
