In June 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between public and private sector partners from Germany and Latvia to foster bilateral cooperation and digital innovation in maritime technologies. The agreement aims to address challenges in port infrastructure management in the Baltic Sea. The signatories included LMT, the Freeport of Riga, the Port of Hamburg, the Electronic Communications Office of Latvia, the Fleet of Hamburg, and LVR Flote.
To celebrate this milestone and provide maritime connectivity innovation enthusiasts with more context on what this MoU means for LMT, we conducted four short video interviews with our Innovation Team Lead, Artūrs Lindenbergs. Watch them below!
Artūrs shares that the journey towards signing the MoU began a few years ago with a bold idea: that 5G has the capacity to revolutionize maritime connectivity. The idea was then further developed in collaboration with LVR Fleet and Riga Freeport, as the 5G maritime connectivity concept began to take shape. Later on, it was demonstrated, with the Port of Hamburg as one of the demo attendees, and so the groundwork for the MoU was laid. For more details, watch the video:
The significance of the MoU extends beyond the scope of LMT’s interest, according to Artūrs. It’s not just about a single company’s or port’s needs – it’s an essential step for the whole maritime ecosystem. See the video below for more:
Artūrs emphasizes that partnering with the Port of Hamburg and signing the MoU is the beginning of a practical collaboration with ports, technology companies, and academia. There are four defined verticals for the R&D that is conducted within the scope of the MoU:
- Port inspection,
- Maritime containers inspection,
- 5G deployment for real-time data transmission,
- And transferring hydrographic data in real time.

All parties involved in the MoU, including LMT, have set an ambitious goal – to achieve significant progress in R&D by October 2025. Why exactly this timeline? Watch the video:
