Improving cross-border network service continuity and adopting 5G infrastructure in public environments and 5G corridors in Northern Europe.
About the project
The 5G Northern European Transport Corridor (5G NETC) project deploys and configures dedicated 5G coverage sections along highways and railway corridors in the Northern European part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and North Sea-Baltic corridors.
Within this project’s scope, a partnership between LMT, Telia Sverige, and Telia Finland is bringing 5G connectivity to roads and railways in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Sweden, Norway, and Finland.
Project aims and scope
The 5G NETC project aims to lay a foundation for service continuity when a vehicle crosses a member state border by introducing Inter Public Land Mobile Network Handover (PLMN HO) for data connection sessions. Inter PLMN HO will be introduced at the following corridor border crossings: Sweden-Finland, Sweden-Norway, Sweden-Denmark, Finland-Estonia, Estonia-Latvia, and Latvia-Lithuania.
To facilitate 5G coverage continuity along transport corridors, 5G NETC will enable full-scale usage of the first versions of Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) services in public environments through 5G application and service accessibility. The project will also enable the introduction of the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) standard, as well as the development and implementation of new communication solutions for railways based on FRMCS.
The 5G NETC will also ensure dedicated capacity through High-Value Connectivity for CCAM and FRMCS services and other industrial or public services with specific quality requirements.
LMT in 5G NETC
LMT is a key partner in the 5G NETC project, collaborating with Telia Sverige and Telia Finland to bring next-generation connectivity to Latvia. LMT’s expertise is crucial for deploying robust 5G networks along key transport corridors, ensuring seamless communication for vehicles, passengers, and logistics.
This 5G infrastructure, powered by LMT, will significantly improve safety and efficiency in Latvia. Real-time data exchange and monitoring will enable advanced automated mobility solutions, paving the way for more innovative and safer transportation.
Furthermore, LMT’s participation in 5G NETC is expected to boost Latvia’s economic growth. By driving digital transformation and fostering innovative services within the transport and mobility sectors, the project will enhance competitiveness and unlock new economic opportunities.
This project has received funding from the European Health and Digital Executive Agency Connecting Europe Facility programme under Grant Agreement No. 101094293 — 21-EU-DIG-5G NETC.
