Digital Backbone Experimentation

DiBaX is NATO experimentation program designed to test and showcase the latest advancements in digital technologies and their military use.

Challenge

Modern-day security challenges require defence forces to operate seamlessly across air, land, maritime, cyber, and space domains. As threats evolve and digital technologies advance, ensuring secure, real-time information sharing between multinational forces is essential for mission success. Interoperability, resilience in conflict zones, and the ability to leverage emerging technologies are critical to maintaining NATO’s technological edge and operational readiness.

About the project

The Digital Backbone is a critical component of NATO’s infrastructure, providing connectivity for complex operations. Digital Backbone Experimentation – DiBaX – is its largest experimentation that focuses on testing and validating next-generation communication technologies in realistic operational settings.

Held annually since 2022 in Latvia, the exercise brings together NATO headquarters, member nations, industry partners, and defence experts to conduct scenario-based experiments.  Latvia’s advanced 5G military test site in the Ādaži military base provides an ideal platform for such experiments.

The role of LMT

LMT is the key NATO DiBaX partner, acting as the technical integrator and co-host of the experiment by providing critical infrastructure, equipment, and expertise. LMT’s network infrastructure enables a wide range of tests across different domains – including maritime, air, land, and cyber – enabling secure, real-time communication in challenging environments.
