EU project that aims to enhance all-terrain vehicles, light armoured vehicles and main battle tanks through developments and upgrades.
Challenge
In an era of evolving security threats and rapid technological advancements, European Member States’ defence forces must enhance their mobility, resilience, and interoperability to ensure operational superiority. The growing complexity of modern battlefields demands next-generation armoured vehicles that can seamlessly integrate with digital ecosystems, leverage advanced situational awareness, and operate effectively in contested environments. To strengthen its overall defence industry and ensure a robust defence infrastructure, Europe must strengthen cross-border cooperation, standardise platforms and drive innovation in armoured vehicle technology.
About the project
Building on the success of the EDIDP 2020 FAMOUS project, this initiative continues the work initiated by its predecessor. The European Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems 2 (FAMOUS 2) focuses on developing next-generation armoured platforms and upgrading existing ones, including future all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), light armoured vehicles (LAVs), and main battle tanks (MBTs).
The FAMOUS 2 project aims to maximise synergies, enhance standardisation, and improve interoperability among armoured vehicles to meet the most demanding operational requirements. It integrates cutting-edge technologies and innovative concepts to strengthen the capabilities of European land forces.
The role of LMT
In collaboration with project consortium members, LMT is leading External Communication development for ATV and LAV. In addition, LMT is actively advancing practical implementations and research and development across key areas such as command and control (C2), interoperability, and artificial intelligence applications. Another contribution is our nationally developed Battlefield Information Management System (BIMS). BIMS is a mission management and situational awareness system designed to provide comprehensive, real-time intelligence and data integration.
The FAMOUS 2 project is financed by the European Defence Fund (EDF) under Grant Agreement No. 101103043-FAMOUS2-EDF-2021-GROUND-D-2.
